Baltimore, MD, October 2013 – One hundred and seventy five million people visit AZA-accredited (Association of Zoos and Aquariums) zoos each year. These zoos have a daunting task of providing comfortable accommodations for their animals in a fun, educational environment, all while ensuring the safety and security of those individuals and families visiting their facilities. It is with this responsibility in mind that the management team at the San Diego Zoo has recruited REGAL to support in the enhancement of their emergency response planning.
Meticulous planning is required outside of the public eye to prepare for any number of potentially hazardous situations. From a natural disaster like an earthquake to an animal escape or a man-made threat, the necessary steps must be taken to ensure the proper response tactics are defined and the appropriate staff are trained to carry out those procedures. To that end, the subject matter experts at REGAL are currently working with the San Diego Zoo to enhance their efforts and provide support with their emergency planning and preparedness tasks. REGAL is working with the security team as well as senior leadership to analyze their emergency action plan and develop optimal solutions to assist with planning, preparation, training, and exercises; all for the purpose of protecting the thousands of patrons that visit the Zoo. For this task, the REGAL team is creating a 2D model of the entire venue, populating the model to full capacity, and constructing a baseline analysis scenario. With this project, REGAL is also laying the ground work to build upon the model for future tasks. Once the baseline is complete, additional services are readily available, some of which include but are not limited to: multiple defined scenarios, resource allocation, customized emergency response reference guides, and a customized public service announcement. Additionally, the REGAL team will be showcasing this task and the results at the upcoming IAAPA (The International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions) Expo being held on November 18th through the 22nd at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando Florida.
The San Diego Zoo features multiple exhibits and also hosts several special events throughout the year. The Zoo houses over 3,700 animals, sits on approximately 100 acres, and its parent organization, San Diego Zoo Global, is the largest zoological membership association in the world, representing more than a half million people. REGAL is extremely excited to be a part of this task and looks forward to providing continued support and building upon this partnership with the San Diego Zoo.
